The 2023 Asian Games are currently underway, so the medal table is subject to change. However, as of September 30, 2023, the top three countries on the medal table are:
- China (38 gold medals, 29 silver medals, 23 bronze medals)
- South Korea (25 gold medals, 23 silver medals, 30 bronze medals)
- Japan (22 gold medals, 20 silver medals, 28 bronze medals)
India is currently in fourth place with 18 gold medals, 15 silver medals, and 25 bronze medals.
What is Asian Games ?
"The Asian Games, also known as Asiad, is a continental multi-sport event held every four years among athletes from all over Asia. The Games were regulated by the Asian Games Federation (AGF) from the first Games in New Delhi, India in 1951, until the 1978 Games. Since the 1982 Games, they have been organized by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), after the breakup of the Asian Games Federation. The Games are recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and are described as the second largest multi-sport event after the Olympic Games."
The Asian Games feature a wide variety of sports, including both Olympic and non-Olympic sports. Some of the most popular sports at the Asian Games include athletics, aquatics, badminton, basketball, boxing, cycling, football, gymnastics, judo, kabaddi, rowing, shooting, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, volleyball, weightlifting, and wrestling.
Hosting Countries
The Asian Games have been hosted by nine different nations: India, Japan, South Korea, the Philippines, Thailand, Iran, China, Qatar, and Indonesia. The next Asian Games will be held in Hangzhou, China in 2023.
Some of the top sportsmen from India who are expected to compete in the 2023 Asian Games :
- Neeraj Chopra (Javelin Throw): Chopra is the reigning Olympic champion in the javelin throw. He is also the current national record holder in the event. Chopra is one of the favorites to win gold at the Asian Games.
- Murali Sreeshankar (Long Jump): Sreeshankar is the current national record holder in the long jump. He is also the first Indian athlete to qualify for the Olympic final in the long jump. Sreeshankar is expected to challenge for a medal at the Asian Games.
- Muhammed Anas Yahiya (400m): Anas is the current national record holder in the 400m. He is also the first Indian athlete to win a gold medal in the 400m at the Asian Championships. Anas is expected to challenge for a medal at the Asian Games.
- Muhammed Ajmal (400m): Ajmal is another top Indian 400m runner. He is the current national champion in the event. Ajmal is expected to team up with Anas to help India challenge for a medal in the 4x400m relay.
- Sajan Prakash (Swimming): Prakash is one of the top swimmers in India. He has won several medals at the international level, including gold medals at the South Asian Games and the Asian Age Group Championships. Prakash is expected to compete in several events at the Asian Games, including the 200m freestyle, the 400m freestyle, and the 1500m freestyle.
